Within the span of one semester, students will be given actual samples of undescribed insect species, some background literature, and will collaboratively coauthor a publication to describe them. Students can bring their own undescribed species, or will be provided undescribed Amazonian cockroaches. The course will progress through the following units in order: -Background on taxonomy and species description -compiling background literature on each organism -Lab-based observation and data collection -Writing descriptions -Editing photos, illustrating morphology, and making figures. -Drafting a taxonomic manuscript (time-permitting) -submitting for publication (time permitting) |
